Thanksgiving 2015. We were hosting dinner that year. My son was shy of 2 months old and not even close to being on a regular sleep schedule. My husband and I had been up most of the night and into the morning prepping the meal, organizing (hiding) the baby stuff that had taken over our home, and tending to our always-awake infant. This was the first year in my entire life of holidays that I hadn't applied a stitch of makeup or styled my hair in a smart, flattering way, (I don't even think I showered)-- but I was too tired to be self-conscious-- don't worry, I have GREATLY loosened my self-expectations since. Nonetheless, the table got set, food was served hot, and bellies grew full. Afterwards, we boxed leftovers and looked forward to days ahead without having to scavenge for sustenance (we still hadn't figured out how to cook and be parents). Warmth emerged from the opened door of the refrigerator. Say again? Turns out our fridge decided that day to stop being the one "tried and true" appliance we could count on. It was older- probably arrived when the previous owners remodeled the kitchen in the early '90's, but it had done its job well. In finding a replacement, we had many options to choose from with all the newer, shinier models with fancy drawers. We ordered one of those metallic, mammoth-sized cold boxes the following day. Fast forward to May 11, 2022. Delivered today was our third refrigerator since 2015. Yes, THIRD. Appliances with all the technology and "smarts" seem to get replaced as often as my cellphone. So bet your sweet baby lettuce we now have a Home Warranty Policy from American Home Shield® through Safeco Insurance. They have plans for appliances, home systems (like heating and air conditioning), or everything in one package. A lot has changed in the world since 2015 and maybe someday appliances will be made to last again. Until then I will stand here and admire our newest refrigerator as I realize the store delivered the WRONG one. SO many feelings and opinions right now, but SERVICE in 2022 will have to wait for another blog. |
